Tree Guard Deer Repellent Tree Guard Deer Repellent is a "taste repellent" made from Bitrex, designed to deter deer from browsing on seedlings. Tree Guard Deer Repellent has proven to be effective at discouraging deer browse. A unique latex polymer carries the active ingredient, Bitrex (the most bitter substance known to humans), and holds it to the surface of the plant, resisting rain, and wash-off for up to 100 days. At Southwest Badger RC&D, we believe that not all planting problems are necessarily solved with products. Sometimes, the best strategy to deal with reforestation issues is more active landowner management. To achieve greater reforestation success, forest landowners need to be aware of the issues that threaten their trees and take the appropriate action. If there are signs of deer pressure, consider opening up your property to more hunting access. If rabbits or other rodents seem to be impacting your trees, adopt more aggressive mowing and vegetation control practices, since this breaks up wildlife gathering near your trees.

Home-made Solutions
Southwest Badger RC&D has also discovered some cost-effective, home-made options to address common wildlife browse issues.

• Bud Caps: Bud caps for coniferous trees can be made from wax paper. A cheap solution is to cut wax paper into 2-inch by 8-inch strips and fold the wax paper around the terminal bud (top leader) and then staple or tape the wax paper. Deer that usually browse the top of conifers apparently don't like biting into wax paper, so they move on. • Deer or Animal Repellent: Some landowners have found that a cheap deer and animal repellent is to mix one dozen eggs with four gallons of water and liberally apply to trees and shrubs that are experiencing animal browse. Apparently, the smell repels many animals. This solution, however, is often easily washed off after rain, thus requiring additional applications.
